urya Dharma Sitompul, a Batam Renumeration Board member from the Indonesian Prosperous Labor Union (SBSI), has said that Batam's 2014 minimum wage would likely be set at Rp 2,172,973, which was based on proposals from the government, workers and businesspeople.
'The meeting to discuss the provincial minimum wage for 2014 will continue on Nov.6 at the Batam Mayor Office,' said Surya.
Thousands of workers in Batam took part in a nationwide strike, forcing approximately 1,000 foreign investment companies in 26 industrial estates to shut down almost all of their operations.
After carrying out sweeps in industrial parks from 7 a.m., rally participants staged an oration at Simpang Kabil Batam, an intersection that connects several industrial compounds, residential settlements and Hang Nadim International Airport. Several roads were closed, causing severe gridlock in almost all main roads in Batam.
The chairman of the Indonesian Metal Workers Union (SPMI) Batam Suprapto said the nationwide strike was conducted to fight for a minimum wage increase of 50 percent, the abolition of the outsourcing system, the simultaneous implementation of Social Security Providers (BPJS) for the health sector on Jan.1,2014, and the immediate endorsement of draft law on domestic workers.
Suprapto said as many as 20,000 workers participated in today's strike.
'We failed to blockade Hang Nadim Airport because our plan leaked out, so we just staged an oration,' he said. (ebf)
